2014

Dear Members,

Greetings from the ISG Secretariat.

 

The 54th annual conference of your Society was held at Ahmedabad between November 28 – December 1, 2013. The meeting was very well arranged. You all will agree that the program was very well planned and the event  was a grand success. The Gujarat Chapter of the ISG, Dr Sudhanshu Patwari, Dr Nilay Mehta, Dr Manish Bhatnagar and their team deserve special thanks and congratulations for their untiring efforts. I hope all of you enjoyed the scientific sessions and the warm hospitality of the organizing team. This year too we ran three parallel sessions throughout the meeting and all the halls were packed to the capacity. The feedback that the organizers as well as the Society got from the participants and delegates was very heartening and encouraging.

 

The Governing Council:

At the valedictory function of the ISG at Ahmedabad, Dr VG MohanPrasad (Coimbatore) took charge as President of your Society from Prof. SP Singh. Dr AC Anand (New Delhi) was elected as the President-elect, Dr RK Dhiman (Chandigarh) and Dr Manisha Dwivedi (Allahabad were elected as members to the Governing Council for 2014-2017.

Awards and orations for 2013-14:
Prof. YK Chawla (Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh) delivered the prestigious Dr PN Chuttani Oration on “Unravelling the enigma of hepatocellular carcinoma”. The ISG-CM Habibullah oration  (previously known as ISG-Astra Zeneca oration) was delivered by Prof. RK Dhiman (Chandigarh) while  Dr Ajay Duseja (Chandigarh) delivered the Zydus-Alidac Oration (previously known as Abbott oration). Dr. Sandeep Nijhawan (Jaipur)  was the recipient of the Olympus J Mitra Award, Dr. Ramesh Kumar (Bihar) won the  
ISG-SR Naik Memorial Award, and Dr Ashish Goel (Vellore) won the ISG- Alkem-Om Prakash Memorial award that is given to a scientist under 40 years of age, for the best research in Gastroenterology.

For the year 2014, the ISG-Zydus -Alidac oration will be delivered by Dr Vineet Ahuja (AIIMS, New Delhi)  and the ISG-Prof CM Habilbullah will be delivered by Dr Pramod garg (AIIMS, New Delhi).

Gastroenterology Young Masters and Young Clinicians Program

During the year gone by, your Society organized two Gastroenterology Young Masters (GYM) and one Young Clinician’s Program (YCP) for DM and DNB postgraduates. The GYMs were organized at Mumbai and Chandigarh, while the YCP was organized at Mumbai. The society acknowledges the efforts and time spent by its stalwarts: Dr. SK Acharya, Dr. G. Choudhuri, Dr GK Makharia, Dr S. Bhatia, Dr Akash Shukla, Prof DK Bhasin and Dr Usha Dutta and the faculty members as well as the DM and DNB residents and all others who were actively involved in the organization of these training programs and making them successful.

Annual Conference, 2014

The 55th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Gastroenterology will be held in Mumbai between December 19-23, 2014 at Hotel Renaissance. The Organizing Secretary, Dr Amit Maydeo has already sent the first circular that you all would have received by now. He will keep you posted on the arrangements in the future too. Bidding for 2016 ISGCON meeting

Bids are invited for the 2016 annual meeting of your Society. Only members of the ISG can bid. The bids must be cleared and supported by the respective State chapter. The last date to receive the bids by the Secretariat is October 31, 2014. Those shortlisted will be asked to be at the ISGCON 2014 meeting and make a short presentation of the facilities and infrastructure at their city at the valedictory function.

Chapter activities

The state chapters of Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP, MP & Chhattisgarh, Odisha , Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, West Bengal and Kerala held several meetings in addition to their annual meetings. All the meetings were well attended and were of very high scientific content. Mid-term ISG meetings were organized by the Rajasthan, UP, Delhi, Odisha and Tamilnadu chapters.

All state chapters are advised to inform the Secretariat about their office bearers (including their phone numbers and email IDs). They are also advised to inform the Secretariat about the activities of the chapter in advance and after the meeting/activity is over so that adequate coverage is given by the ISG.

 

Submission of abstracts for ISGCON 2014

Abstract submission is open. Please note that abstracts for ISGCON 2014 are to be submitted on-line at the ISG website www.isg.org.in Abstracts sent by any other means or elsewhere, will not be accepted. The deadline for abstract submission is 15th August 2014. Please also note that the last date will not be extended.

Gastroenterology, liver and endoscopy clinics

Like in the previous years, the ISG meeting at Mumbai will have interesting cases presented as Clinics in Gastroenterology, Liver and Endoscopy. We have three stalwarts conducting the clinics. The Gastroenterology Clinics will be conducted by Prof. Deepak Bhasin (dkbhasind@hotmail.com) from PGIMER, Chandigarh. The Liver Clinics are to be conducted by Prof. SK Sarin (shivsarin@gmail.com) from GB Pant  Hospital New Delhi and the Endoscopy Clinics will be conducted by Dr. D.N. Reddy (aigindia@yahoo.co.in) of Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Hyderabad. Those selected to present their cases and videos will be invited to present them as Faculty. Please send in your interesting cases and endoscopic videos to the concerned moderator on the email ID provided above by August 15th 2014. 

Indian Journal of Gastroenterology

The official Journal of your Society , the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology is making steady progress under the leadership of the Editor-in- Chief Prof BS Ramakrishna and the new Editorial Board.  You might have noticed that all the issues are now published and delivered on time. The Journal is now being published by the world renowned publisher Springer. The Journal now has a web-based submission (www.editorialmanager.com/ijog/default.asp). I hope you would have seen the new look of the Journal.  I would request members to please send in their suggestions to me as well as to Prof BS Ramakrishna for further improvement of the Journal. Members who are not receiving the Journal should send their membership number along with their updated address to Dr. BS Ramakrishna, the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal (ijg@indianjgastro.com) with cc to the Secretariat.

 

Election of Office Bearers


The post of President-elect, Secretary-General and 2 posts of Governing Council members of your society will fall vacant this year. Election process will start soon. You will get the nomination forms for the elections very shortly. Please note that except for the Governing Council members (for whom the eligibility is membership of the Society) for all other office bearers serving a minimum of 3 years in the Governing Council as an elected member is required.

 

Task Forces

The ISG has constituted Task Forces to collect data and develop practice guidelines for certain chronic diseases, such as GERD, IBS, dyspepsia, malabsorption and IBD. The questions and pro forma of some of the diseases are on the net, and I strongly urge all interested members to join in this collective scientific activity to help the society develop consensus guidelines soon. The data collected on GERD and IBS in the first phase has been analyzed and presented. We have had a few publication coming out of these Task Forces.

Those interested in joining the Task Force(s) may kindly download the information and questionnaire from the website and contact the coordinators of the respective groups.

 

ISG Travel fellowships for attending APDW 2014, Bali

The Indian Society of Gastroenterology is pleased to offer 20 International Travel Fellowships to attend the Asia Pacific Digestive Week and WCOG to be held at Shanghai to its members. Of these, 10 fellowships  will be exclusively for Young Gastroenterologists (<37 years, members of ISG, submitted an abstract to APDW, has demonstrable consistent commitment to Gastroenterology based on the candidate's CV). The remaining 10 fellowships will be for members of all ages. Selection will be done by a panel of judges. Preference will be given to those who have not obtained a travel fellowship from the ISG in the last 5 years and have no financial support from any other source. Aspiring candidates should send copies of their submitted abstracts, CV, and photocopy of their passports to the secretariat by July 31, 2014. Selection results will be announced by early October. A total support amount of Rs 50, 000 will be provided to those selected, on their return and on furnishing of the following: evidence of attendance, receipt of registration fees, original air-ticket jackets with boarding card and report of their learning experience. A mail regarding this has already been sent to the members.

 

Awards

Nominations for the various awards for 2014-15 should be sent to the secretariat. Please send 5 hard copies and one electronic copy (by email    drspmisra@gmail.com) to the Secretariat.  The last date for all applications for awards is August 15, 2014. Please indicate the name of the award or fellowship on the envelope cover. Details of the awards are as follows:

ISG-Dr P N Chuttani Oration (2014 and 2015)

Nominations are invited for this prestigious oration. Nominations along with 10 sets of the curriculum vitae, should reach the Secretariat by August 15, 2014. Kindly also send an electronic version by email. The nominee should have a distinguished academic career and should have made outstanding contributions in Gastroenterology or related fields. The awardee will be selected on the basis of the bio-data. In case no nomination is received or no suitable awardee is found, the Scientific Committee along with a representative of the Trust will have the right to nominate any person who fulfils these criteria. The awardee will be provided airfare within India, and reimbursement for accommodation for three days during the annual conference.

ISG-Prof CM Habibullah Oration (2015) (earlier known as ISG-Astra-Zeneca oration)

The applicant should have done research in any branch of Gastroenterology, as evidenced by at least 20 publications in recognized journals. The publications should be full reports with references; summaries in conference proceedings or abstracts of presentations are not acceptable. The work should have been done in India as far as possible. If a suitable awardee is not found, the award may be given to a person whose work has significance for Indian conditions. Five sets of the application submitted by the proposer should include the curriculum vitae and reprints of the five best research papers of the applicant.

ISG-Zydus Oration (2015) (earlier known as ISG-Knoll oration)

The applicant should have done research in gastroenterology as evidenced by at least 20 publications in the form of full reports with references; summaries in conference proceedings or abstracts of presentations are not acceptable.

ISG- Om Prakash Memorial Award (2014)

This award will be given to a gastroenterologist member of the ISG who is below the age of 40 years. The award is based on the 10 best research papers published by the applicant. Five sets of the application should each include the biodata and reprints of the five best research papers of the applicant. An electronic copy should also be submitted by email. The application may be submitted by the prospective awardee or by a proposer who should be a member of the Society.

ISG-J Mitra Memorial Endoscopy Award (2014)

This award to promote continuing education in the field of endoscopy is given to a senior member of the Society skilled in endoscopy who will visit one or more centers to enhance knowledge in the field. The awardee will be selected based on experience in endoscopy (as judged from the biodata and publications) and the centers proposed by him. Five sets of the application should each include the bio-data and reprints of the five best research papers published in the field of endoscopy. The application may be submitted by the prospective awardees or by a proposer who should be a member of the Society.

 

ISG-Dr S R Naik Memorial Award (2014)

This award will be given to an Indian scientist for the best published work in the field of diseases of the digestive tract and liver, and other sciences as related to these areas in 2012-13.  Applicants are required to send their full bio-data, a list of publications in the calendar year for which the award is meant, and 5 photocopies of such publications, to the Hon. Secretary. Please also send an electronic copy of the entire application by email. Selection Committee for the award will consist of two representatives of the ISG and one person from among the faculty of the Department of Gastroenterology at the SGPGI. The award carries a certificate and a cash of Rs. 20,000.

ISG-Dr S R Naik Travel Fellowships (2014)

These fellowships are aimed at encouraging exchange of postgraduate students (DM/MCh/DNB) between different academic departments imparting training in gastroenterology, surgical gastroenterology and pediatric gastroenterology. These will be awarded to postgraduate students in the above fields to enable them to visit another academic department for training.
Applicants are required to send their bio-data, proof of being a bonafide student in the specialty (from the head of the their department), name of the department and institution that they wish to visit, a letter from the head of the host department accepting her/him for training, and a certificate that s/he is not in receipt of any other financial support for this purpose.
Selection Committee for the fellowship will consist of three persons (a) a representative of the ISG, (b) one person from among the faculty of the Departments of Gastroenterology or Surgical Gastroenterology at the SGPGI, Lucknow and (c) a person nominated by the Head, Department of Gastroenterology, SGPGI, Lucknow.
The fellowship will cover the cost of travel (AC chair car or AC-3-tier), and of lodging and boarding (an amount of Rs. 5,000 per month, reduced on a pro-rata basis if duration is shorter). The fellowship will be tenable for a maximum period of one month.

TTT meetings:

The train-the trainer meetings are organized by the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO). All applications should be routed through the Secretariat of your society. Please watch the website of the WGO http://www.worldgastroenterology.org/index.html for announcements.

Other Awards

·         Young Investigator Award for best paper (age below 40 years). Two prizes of Rs 20,000 each will be given to the best papers in clinical and basic research.

·         Award for best paper in Plenary Session. Two prizes of Rs 30,000 each will be given to the best papers in clinical and basic research.

·         Please send five sets of full papers for both these awards as hard copies, along with an electronic version on a floppy disk to the secretariat before 15th August, 2014. The senior author should also mention in the covering note whether he consents to the paper to be accepted as free paper or poster, should it not find a place in the limited slots available for the above award sessions. If the prior consent is not enclosed and the paper does not get selected for presentation in the award session, it will not be scheduled in the regular paper and poster sessions. The selection will be done by a panel of judges to whom the manuscripts will be sent without the face sheets, to ensure anonymity and fairness.

Gratitude

Dear members, this is my last year as Secretary-General of your society. I was humbled and honored to serve our society in this capacity for 6 years.  I am extremely happy to place on record my deep sense of gratitude to our presidents: Prof P. Kar, Prof G. Choudhuri, Prof. Ashok Chako,  Prof. BS Ramakrishna, Prof SP Singh  and  Dr VG Mohan Prasad  for their valuable guidance and help. I have bothered them from time to time, even at odd hours. I also thank my colleagues in the governing council especially the treasurers of your society Prof Rakesh Aggarwal and Dr GK Makharia for their help and cooperation, and to all the members of the society for being such wonderful colleagues. I am also grateful to the organizers of the GYM and YCP programs of the ISG and the Chairpersons and members of the ISG task forces. They took out time from their busy schedule to put in extra work for your society. During the year gone by I may have, knowingly or unknowingly, annoyed and hurt some of you, for which I seek your forgiveness.
