Our Mission
To promote awareness among the general population and healthcare professionals about the widespread nature of gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders, and to provide high-quality care by enhancing the standards of education and training in gastroenterology in India.
Our Vision
Since little is known about the prevalence of Gastrointestinal and Hepatology disorders, out of every 10 adults in the world 4 suffer from gastrointestinal disorders of varying severity. With the advancement of technology and treatment, a large section of the population is not adequately educated including patients in desperate need.

Dear Members of ISG,
I am incredibly honoured, humbled and grateful to each of you for placing your trust in me as the new President of Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG). I am excited to take this opportunity to work together to advance our shared goals and visions.
Before we look ahead, I want to take a moment to cherish the strong foundation we stand on. Over the years, the ISG has played an instrumental role in promoting excellence in research, education and patient care. We are proud that it has been continually serving as a beacon of knowledge dissemination. We owe our gratitude to the dedication of past leaders, whose efforts have helped the ISG to grow into a supportive and vibrant community. We extend our heartfelt acknowledgements to the outgoing President, Dr Udhay C Ghoshal, for his invaluable leadership and contributions to the ISG.

I am truly honored to serve as the Secretary General of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), a vibrant and dynamic community of over three thousand dedicated professionals. As we stand on the threshold of a new era in healthcare, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for our society.
Gastroenterology is a field that continually evolves, driven by innovation, research, and a deep commitment to improving the health and well-being of our patients. The ISG has been at the forefront of this transformation, fostering excellence in gastroenterology and hepatology through its various activities, including annual conferences, workshops, research initiatives, and educational programs.

ISG is working towards its goal to fulfil its vision to provide an opportunity for professionals in the field of gastroenterology, hepatology and related disciplines to learn about the latest research and advancements, collaborate with colleagues and actively participate in this rapidly advancing field.
Young Clinician Program (YCP)
The YCP is a 3 day event which acts as a stepping stone for young aspiring residents from across the country and introduces them to the vast and extensive field of Gastroenterology. The initial part of the program is dedicated to mastering the fundamental approach to patient care, delving into the nuances of effective history-taking, physical examination techniques, and the formulation of thoughtful differential diagnoses. Seasoned faculty members share their expertise through interactive lectures and small-group discussions, equipping the residents with the knowledge to deal with the real world patient problems.
Evidence Based Gastroenterology - (EBG)
The EBG is the brainchild of ISG which has acted as the appropriate bridge between the fresher and the final year academic programs. Each year, residents from various institutions across the country participate for a ready reckoner on topics that aim to broadly cover the vast field of Gastroenterology. These range from common clinical situations to difficult to treat diseases and provides a sound and scientific backbone to concept building necessary for the younger professionals in the field. Senior faculty, each of whom are a master in their own specific subspecialty, guide the students via the latest and cutting edge knowledge, honing them to be better in their future endeavors.
Gastroenterology Young Masters - (GYM)
In 2008, ISG had decided to launch national training programs directed specifically to trainees in Gastroenterology, to address a long-felt need to revitalize training in GE in India and to create a platform for making the standards uniform across the country. The GYM program is targeted for exam going final year DM and DNB students where they gather to showcase their knowledge and clinical acumen. Over the course of three intensive days, participants engage in a series of case discussions and interactive quizzes. These are designed to simulate the rigor and pressure of high-stakes clinical situations enabling them to collaborate with their peers to devise the most effective diagnostic and treatment strategies.
Train the Trainers - (TTT)
Encouraged by the training programs organized by WGO, the Train the Trainers (TTT) program is a recent initiative of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology that funds 25 consultants across India. TTT is a four-day specialized educational program. The program format includes basic and advanced research methodologies, concept-making lectures in basic sciences, and writing and presentation skills.
Master Class
The COVID-19 pandemic led the world to explore new innovative ways of imparting education through online seminars and courses. Since all the teaching institutions suspended their academic activities, the ISG introduced a series of web-based Master Class lectures and panel discussions on the relevant topics for GI trainees, practicing gastroenterologists, and hepatologists.

ISG - FP Antia Life Time Achievement Award
The ISG - FP Antia Lifetime Achievement Award is a prestigious honor by the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), based on nominations, to recognize exceptional contributions to gastroenterology, inspired by the legacy of Dr. Framroz Pirojshaw Antia.
Dr. Antia, a pioneering gastroenterologist, established India’s first independent Department of Gastroenterology at BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in 1954. His leadership in clinical care, research, and education, along with his influential publication Clinical Dietetics and Nutrition, helped shape the specialty’s growth in India.
This award honors ISG members who embody Dr. Antia’s principles of excellence, innovation, and mentorship. It encourages continued advancement in clinical care, scientific inquiry, and compassionate patient care, ensuring the ongoing development of gastroenterology in India.
ISG - PN Chuttani Oration
The P.N. Chhuttani Distinguished Achievement Oration is a prestigious award established to honor the legacy of Dr. P.N. Chhuttani, a pioneering figure in Indian medicine and gastroenterology. This oration recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of gastroenterology, and public health, in line with Dr. Chhuttani’s groundbreaking work.
It celebrates excellence in medical research, education, and clinical practice, and is awarded to those whose achievements have significantly advanced the field of gastroenterology in India.
The oration serves as a platform to highlight and inspire future innovations and contributions in the medical community. The awardee will be invited to deliver the oration during the ISGCON conference. Selection is conducted by a panel of judges nominated by the ISG executive, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
ISG - Dr Rakesh Tandon Oration
The R.K. Tandon Oration is a distinguished honor awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the field of gastroenterology and medical education in India.
This prestigious award is named after Dr. R.K. Tandon, a renowned gastroenterologist and academician who dedicated his career to advancing the field of digestive sciences. Known for his pioneering research, innovative teaching methods, and mentorship, Dr. Tandon’s work continues to inspire generations of medical professionals.
The awardee will be invited to deliver the oration during the ISGCON conference. Selection is conducted by a panel of judges nominated by the ISG executive, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
ISG - CM Habibullah Oration
The ISG - Dr. C.M. Habibullah Distinguished Researcher Oration is a prestigious award that honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the fields of gastroenterology and research, in the spirit of Dr. C.M. Habibullah’s groundbreaking work.
Dr. Habibullah, a pioneering figure in gastroenterology, dedicated his career to advancing medical science and shaping the field of liver research in India.
This oration recognizes those who continue his legacy through significant academic, research, and clinical achievements. The award celebrates excellence in gastroenterology, highlighting the importance of innovation, patient care, and medical education, and is presented during the ISGCON conference.
ISG - Dr Balakrishnan Clinical Award
The ISG - Dr. V Balakrishnan Clinical Excellence Award honors the legacy of Prof. V Balakrishnan, a pioneer in gastroenterology known for his unparalleled clinical expertise, innovative approaches, and compassionate care.
A visionary in his field, Dr. Balakrishnan dedicated his life to advancing gastroenterology in India, leaving an indelible mark on medical practice, education, and research. He inspired generations of students and colleagues through his passion for teaching and commitment to excellence.
This prestigious award recognizes distinguished gastroenterologists who exemplify his values of clinical excellence, dedication to patient care, and leadership in academics and training. Presented annually during the ISGCON conference, it celebrates outstanding contributions to clinical practice and the advancement of gastroenterology in India, ensuring Dr. Balakrishnan’s legacy continues to inspire the medical community.
ISG - SR Naik Memorial Award
The ISG - Prof. S.R. Naik Best Researcher of the Year Award honors the extraordinary legacy of Prof. S.R. Naik, a renowned gastroenterologist and academic who significantly advanced the fields of clinical gastroenterology and tropical parasitology.
This prestigious award is presented annually to a distinguished ISG member for the best publication in gastroenterology or related sciences. It recognizes excellence in research that advances understanding and treatment of digestive and liver diseases, particularly in contexts relevant to India.
The award highlights the importance of impactful and innovative research and serves as a tribute to Prof. S.R. Naik’s legacy, encouraging members of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology to strive for excellence in scientific inquiry and clinical practice.
ISG - OP Memorial Award
The ISG - OM Prakash Rising Star Award celebrates young and exceptional talent in the field of gastroenterology. Open to ISG members under the age of 40, this prestigious award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated remarkable academic and research achievements, including impactful publications and contributions to the field.
The award highlights the importance of fostering innovation, dedication, and excellence in the next generation of gastroenterologists, with the recipient being honored at the ISGCON conference.
Masters & Fellows of ISG
To recognize some of the pioneer members of the society and the Indian Gastroenterology fraternity, the Governing Council of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology launched a new award based on well-defined criteria. The Master & Fellow of ISG is granted on application by members of ISG. The governing council further decided to honor some of the stalwarts even without application.A certificate and acknowledgment on the ISG website are given to the winners of themasters and fellows of the ISG award during the organization's annual conference. The recipients may sign their names with the designations 'Master of ISG' or 'Fellow of ISG' Applications should be submitted online via the online form. Applications areevaluated by the Screening Committee of ISG (Indian Society of Gastroenterology) on the basis of laid down criteria.
ISG - Best DM/ DNB Thesis Award
The ISG Best DM/DNB Thesis Award recognizes outstanding academic contributions by young gastroenterologists. Open to members of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, this prestigious award honors exemplary thesis work that has been approved by an external panel and resulted in publications in indexed journals within two years of thesis submission.
Eligible applicants include those who have completed their DM/DNB thesis in Gastroenterology within two years of passing their exams.
